Personal Overview

I, Michael A. Schlanger, am SLC’s principal.

I will speak to you in the first person, as I would to any potential client.

For more than 45 years, I have been a courtroom lawyer, representing companies and individuals—as plaintiffs and as defendants— in difficult, fast-paced civil litigation, in trials and appeals. Over four decades, I have been an equity partner in four Am Law 100 firms and, most recently, have been counsel in one of America’s premier litigation boutiques.

I have tried scores of cases to successful resolution before judges, juries and arbitral forums, in big cities and small towns across America.

The cases often have involved allegations of intentional wrongdoing against classes of customers, employees or public bodies. The cases usually have included claims under federal and state statutes (e.g., antitrust, securities, ERISA, RICO,  insurance, consumer protection), misappropriation of intellectual property, violations of the law of lawyering, or retaliatory personnel action for alleged “whistleblowing” against wrongdoing.

The cases have spanned many industries, and have involved claims grounded in economics, finance and accounting, as well as highly technical fields of mechanical and electrical engineering, computer science, biotherapeutics, and fluid dynamics.

In naming me as one of the best commercial litigators in Washington (based on client and peer evaluations), Chambers USA 2012 said "Peers highlight commercial litigator Michael Schlanger as a "formidable opponent in the courtroom," adding that "he never lets the heat of the fight spill over into his dealings with opposing counsel." He is "a highly skilled trial lawyer and brilliant tactician," sources say." Chambers USA 2011 said "Rocket docket phenomenon" Michael Schlanger handles all manner of complex litigation. He receives praise for his "physical and intellectual stamina, all with unremitting clarity and focus and always with a smile." Chambers USA 2010 said he "is a skilled commercial litigator who demonstrates 'outstanding attention to detail.' Clients commend his trial capabilities, noting 'He is a really effective storyteller in the courtroom."' Chambers USA 2009 said he has "earned strong praise as an incredibly versatile litigator 'with great foresight on the battlefield.'"

In the “Biography” section, I will set forth the details of my education, law firm and government affiliations, track record in proceedings of public record, honors, awards, industry recognition and publications. (I remain licensed to practice law, and am insured as an attorney.)

But first, I will set forth the Statement of Principles by which I have endeavored to conduct my professional life.  Hopefully, this will give you some sense of the approach I will bring to bear in my consulting relationships.
